Park and ride expansion to hit Edinburgh Airport traffic
29.05.08
Fears have been raised over increased congestion on the roads to Edinburgh Airport with the expansion of the Ingliston park-and-ride, the Evening News reports. Capacity at the site has more than doubled to 1085 spaces with the completion this week of an £2.7m extension. But airport bosses today warned the expansion will place further strain on the roads into what is Scotland's busiest airport.
Edinburgh Airport is pressing for new road links to the terminal because of concerns the 1960s-built, two-lane Eastfield Road is struggling to cope with the demands placed on it by passengers heading to the airport.
Council officials told the newspaper that they are installing signals on the roundabout next to the park and ride to improve management of the increased traffic flow. But an airport spokesman said the expansion will only add to the traffic build-up at an already busy point.
The airport spokesman said: ‘The expansion of the park and ride facility will place further strain on what is already an overloaded road network. This further strengthens the case for new roads in the area. While we are committed to increasing the number of passengers who travel to and from the airport by public transport, good road access for our growing number of passengers continues to be vital.’
