Noise warning as runway resurfacing work starts
29.03.08
The work to resurface Edinburgh Airport's main runway will start tomorrow night. The £16m, eight-month project will see its main runway closed each night between 23:00 and 05:45, with night flights diverted on to the secondary runway.
Residents in parts of south and west Edinburgh, Midlothian and West Lothian who would not normally experience night flight noise have been warned that they may see or hear aircraft close to their homes during these times. Around 18 aircraft – cargo and mail flights – use the airport between 23:00 and 06:00 each night.
Edinburgh Airport managing director David Johnston said: ‘The resurfacing is extremely important. It will renew the life of the runway for 10 years, and is essential to ensure the continued success of Scotland's busiest airport.'
‘We have made every effort to minimise the impact on local residents. However, because our secondary runway will be operational during the works, residents living under its flight path - which is different from the main runway - may experience some disruption.'
‘If people have concerns, they can call our freephone noise hotline on 0800 731 3397.'
