Airport runway work to affect night flights
29.01.08
The major upgrade of the main runway of Edinburgh Airport this summer will see night flights diverted over thousands of homes not normally affected by planes. The main runway at the airport will be closed at night between 23:00 and 05:45 each Sunday - Friday between March 30 and November while the £16m resurfacing work is carried out.
During the 8 month project, an average of 18 flights taking off or landing each night – mostly cargo and mail flights – will use the secondary runway. This means that aircraft which would normally fly over or close to Cramond, Newbridge, Ratho Station, Broxburn and Livingston will instead follow flight paths over south and south-west Edinburgh and parts of Midlothian and West Lothian. The usual take-off flightpath – over Newbridge and Livingston – will also be changed overnight, with planes heading north-west towards Bo'ness instead.
Information leaflets are being sent to 45,000 households to inform residents about the work and the potential nighttime noise it will create. Nine community drop-in sessions have also been arranged by the airport over the coming weeks to provide more information and answer questions (for details click on the link above to visit the airport's website or telephone 0800 731 3397).
The work also involves temporarily downgrading the runway's landing lights, meaning the airport could be forced to close altogether in the event of fog. The runway was last resurfaced in 1991, and the new runway should last for at least 10 years.
