Hole in runway causes chaos
24.04.08
Passengers at Edinburgh Airport suffered long delays last night after a pothole was discovered in the main runway, which is currently undergoing resurfacing. The runway was was closed to incoming flights for almost 3 hours while engineers fixed the fault and planes were diverted onto the crosswind runway.
The hole, at the Newbridge end of the runway, was discovered at around 14:00 yesterday. Repair work was only completed by 17:15. Eleven flights bound for Edinburgh were diverted to Glasgow and Prestwick airports, while the majority of flights in and out of the airport faced delays.
The runway is undergoing a £16 million, 8 month resurfacing programme which is conducted at nights. It was only started two weeks ago. An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said: ‘The resurfacing work combined with bad weather seems to have caused a hole.'
