BAA to push ahead with airport development
21.12.08
Work has begun on a new £40m departure lounge at Edinburgh Airport, despite threats from the competition watchdog that the airport may to be sold. The project, which will double the size of the existing facility, is one of a number of developments that operator BAA push ahead with to ensure the continued success of the airport.
The Competition Commission recommended last week that BAA be forced to sell Edinburgh airport, along with Gatwick and Stansted, in a bid to open up the UK aviation market. Despite reports that the Edinburgh terminal development may be put on hold, BAA said it remained committed to the future of the airport and said it remains ‘business as usual’.
BAA management plan to challenge the forced sale of Edinburgh Airport and are due to meet the Competition Commission on January 20. A final decision on the airport's future expected before the end of March, with some reports suggesting that Glasgow way be sold instead.
