Sniffer dogs aid airport drugs campaign
20.06.08
Sniffer dogs were deployed to Edinburgh Airport this week as part of a campaign targeting drug smuggling. Lothian and Borders Police worked with the UK Border Agency to tighten security at the airport as part of the week-long initiative. The police were keen to boost their profile to deter passengers from attempting to bring drugs from abroad.
Two police dogs - Skye and Sutton - assisted officers in patrolling the airport in the scheme that ended today. Although drug seizures from the airport are rare, it is reported that police felt the need to stage the initiative as a reminder before the summer season enters full swing.
Inspector Gary Dickson, of the Edinburgh Airport policing unit, said: ‘The intention of the operation was to target flights from European airports, which have been used to smuggle controlled drugs into Scotland in the past. By deploying drugs dogs at the airport we are sending a message that we are serious about targeting those who think they can get away with bringing illegal substances into the country.’
