Stranded passenger forced to pay more for airport parking

A passenger stranded in Austria after flights were suspended because of the volcano ash cloud has been given a parking ticket and forced to pay extra - for leaving his car too long at an Edinburgh Airport car park, the Courier reports. Dave Hanlon travelled by coach, ferry and rail to make it back to the UK after his flight from Salzburg was cancelled. However when he finally made it back to Edinburgh Airport - less than a day after their ticket ran out - he discovered he had been charged for the extra time his car had been in the long stay car park by operators NCP.
Mr Hanlon told the newspaper, ‘It is just outrageous, I couldn’t believe it. The money is not the issue, it is the principle. We took a bus from Salzburg to Calais and sailed to Dover. We then had to take a train to London and travel through the capital on the underground carrying all of our ski equipment, before getting a train back to Edinburgh. We got back to the car park about 14:00 on Saturday afternoon. The car was meant to be out at 18:00 on the Friday but we were charged another £8.20 for an extra day.'
‘The woman was apologetic but said there was nothing they could do. It is just ripping people off. It is a pre-payment car park and we had to give them our telephone number when we were booking it so they could easily have phoned us.’
NCP were asked for comment but did not respond to the newspaper. Other airport car park operators have taken a more lenient view on vehicles left in car parks. A BAA spokesman said customers will not be charged for the extra time they are left in their own car parks, and many off airport parking operators are taking a more reasonable view.
