SNP back airport sale
19.12.08
The Scottish National Party has welcomed the Competition Commission recommendation that BAA should be forced to sell Edinburgh Airport. SNP member for west Scotland Gil Paterson said that the sale should consider the interests of locals and also see the end of BAA's self-regulation of Scotland's three main airports.
Mr Paterson said: 'BAA's ownership of Scotland's major airports has restricted competition and held back our economy. We need real competition between the three Scottish airports to ensure the best services, more direct international flights and competitive prices for business and tourism.'
Shirley-Anne Somerville, SNP member for Lothians, said that Scotland's airports need more direct international flights and investment, in order to remove the need for local travellers to catch connecting services in London or Amsterdam.
