BAA to fight Scottish airport sale
18.09.08
BAA has vowed not to sell any of its Scottish airports despite pressure from the UK competition watchdog. Four weeks ago, BAA was told by the Competition Commission that it may have to sell 3 of its 7 UK airports. The Commission identified ‘significant competition problems’ because of BAA's dominant position and said that it may force the company to sell two of its three London airports, as well as either Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport in Scotland.
BAA this week announced plans to sell Gatwick, but said it wanted to keep Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen (as well as Stansted and Heathrow). BAA CEO Colin Matthews said he had accepted the sale of Gatwick but would fight to keep its other airports. He said: ‘There is quite a long way to go between now and the end of the Competition Commission's work. We disagree with their findings and we'll continue to argue the case as best we can.’
