Edinburgh overtakes Birmingham to become sixth biggest
18.03.10
Edinburgh Airport secured sixth place within the rankings of the UK's busiest airports last year, the Scotsman reports. Now the hub is targeting a place in the top 5 after a major expansion by Ryanair helped it soar past Birmingham and move up a place. A spokesman for the airport stated it was closing in on fifth positioned Luton and on course to overtake it within months.
CAA figures confirm Edinburgh was the only airport within the top ten to gain passengers in the 12 months to February - up by 1.6 percent to 9.02m. Birmingham shrank by 5.4 percent to 9.01m, while Luton was down by 8.6 percent to 9.08m. Glasgow tumbled by 10.6 percent to 7.14m, placing it eighth.
