Airport plea over weapon bling

Police have criticised ‘naive’ passengers entering airport search and security checks without realising they are carrying weapons. Bling knuckleduster necklaces, fashionable bullet belts and imitation gun belts are causing security problems at Edinburgh Airport. Dozens of the fashion accessories have been seized between since May, as well as thousands of knives.
The police are calling for common sense to come before fashion sense. Inspector Gary Dickson, from the airport police unit, said wearable weapons are causing ‘very big problems’. He said: ‘My officers have been called to several incidents at the terminal's central search area where articles worn by passengers have been identified as modified weapons and led to the police being involved.'
'Security do not assume these things are toys or accessories. The x-ray machines in airports are so clear these days that when you see a belt with a handgun-shaped buckle, for example, alarm bells start ringing. Police get involved and passengers about to board a flight panic.'
‘The last thing I want my officers to do is charge someone for being in possession of an offensive weapon, and for them to be denied permission to fly by the airline. We want people to enjoy their travel, but in this era of heightened security, passengers would be ill-advised to wear or carry items which resemble weapons.’
