Aer Lingus reported to be considering Scottish base
14.08.08
Aer Lingus is considering Glasgow or Edinburgh airports as a base for future expansion after opening its first base outside Ireland last year, the Scotsman reports. Enda Corneille, the airline's corporate affairs director, told the newspaper that the airports were contenders for one of three new UK ‘aircraft bases’ it planned.
Mr Corneille said the bases would follow the Belfast ‘template’ (its first base outside Ireland), where 3 aircraft operate ten European routes. However, he gave no timescale for the move and said that it depended on acquiring new short-haul aircraft.
Any Scottish base would face competition from Irish rival Ryanair, which already has a major presence at Glasgow Prestwick and is expanding at Edinburgh Airport. However, Aer Lingus already flies 200,000 passengers a year on its daily flights between Edinburgh and Glasgow and Dublin, and so is an established brand in Scotland.
