International Business Gateway plans announced

A plan to create a ‘world class’ business hub on land next to Edinburgh Airport has been announced. The £300 million development would transform 85 hectares of land lying between the airport and RBS headquarters into an ‘International Business Gateway’ including offices, hotel and conference facilities and an arena. A consortium behind the plan claims it could generate up to £4.4bn for the Scottish economy and create 3,600 jobs within 20 years.
An implementation plan, containing details of the development, says the site offers ‘huge long-term potential’ that is ‘underpinned ‘ by its proximity to the airport and the motorway as well as a new railway station and possibly tram links. The scheme takes in the Royal Highland Showground, which has already announced a £30m upgrade including two new hotels.
A number of organisations have joined forces to put forward the plans. Called the Edinburgh International Development Partnership they include Scottish Enterprise, Edinburgh Airport, the Royal Highland Agricultural Society, Edinburgh City Council and the Scottish Government. However, any progress on the scheme is dependent on securing funding.
