Government does not support drop off fee
14.07.10
The £1 passenger drop-off charge planned at Edinburgh Airport suffered a major blow with ministers saying they oppose it too, The Scotsman has reported. The Scottish Government said the airport's proposal ‘is not supported by ministers’, signaling a preference for persuading rather than punishing motorists to reduce their car use.
The move marks a shift in ministers' public stance on the issue. When asked for the view of the Scottish Government a week ago, a spokesman said: ‘This is a matter for BAA.’ The other main political parties had already said that they oppose the plans to introduce a charge from October.
A Scottish Government spokesman told the newspaper: ‘As has already been made clear, this is a matter for BAA Edinburgh. The proposal is not supported by ministers. The Scottish Government's view is the best means of encouraging drivers to leave their cars at home is to provide suitable public transport alternatives.'
