BAA say airports face 'tough winter'
13.11.08
BAA said that this winter will be ‘tough’ for its Scottish airports after announcing more poor passenger figures. The economic downturn accelerated the slump in passengers at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Airport last month, with their annual passenger total down by 2.4% to 20m. This compares with a 1.6% fall in the year to September.
Glasgow, the worst performing of the 3 airports, saw its passenger drop easing slightly from being down 11% in September to 9.1% lower last month, to 787,226. Aberdeen suffered the sharpest rate of decline, with its passenger total down 5.3% to 302,243. The monthly fall increased from 4.2% in September. Edinburgh's total was down by 3.2% to 794,009 – compared to 2.9% in September – largely due to a 6% drop in passengers on UK flights.
A spokesman for BAA Scotland said: ‘There is no doubt the aviation industry is feeling the pinch as the credit crunch continues to impact on demand. This winter will be tough for airlines and airports in the UK. The challenge is to weather the downturn. We are confident the market will recover.’
