easyJet pilot blinded by laser coing in to land
13.06.08
The pilot of an easyJet passenger plane was blinded by a laser beam during his descent into Edinburgh Airport, the Daily Records reports. Both he and his first officer were dazzled for more than 10 seconds after the bright green light was shone into the cockpit at 1200 feet when the plane was only a few minutes from landing.
It is thought the late-night easyJet flight from Luton was deliberately targeted. The aircraft, which had 42 people on board, was on its final approach into Edinburgh at 23:10 on Tuesday.
The newspaper quotes 'aviation sources' saying that the incident, three miles from Edinburgh Airport, could have been catastrophic. Police are investigating the origin of the beam, which is thought to have come from the city centre area around the castle and the Cowgate.
The aircraft landed safely and it is unclear whether passengers were aware of what had happened. easyJet told the newspaper that they could not comment because the incident was the subject of an ongoing police investigation.
