March passengers down 3.3%

Passengers at Edinburgh Airport were down 3.3% in March (to 671,500) in comparison with 2009, new statistics have revealed. This included a total of 151,000 travellers passing through the hub over the Easter long weekend, down 1.3% on a year earlier, with bad weather, strikes by BA cabin crew and the early Easter all reported to have contributed to the fall. The decline in March compares to 3.5% growth in February.
Airport operator BAA stated the seven days of walkouts, which forced the abandonment of dozens of Scotland - London flights, had decreased passengers by up to 2% - or 27,500. The company stated the collapse of Scottish holiday airline Flyglobespan in December had also had a serious impact at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports, which had still not replaced all the lost capacity.
Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport Managing Director, said ‘Although traffic was down slightly last month, Edinburgh still outperformed other airports, further underlining the continued appeal of the Capital.’ Rival Glasgow saw its passengers plunge by 9.6% last month.
In the year to the end of Match passengers were up 1.6% (9.0m) at Edinburgh, whereas at Glasgow they shrank by 10.3% to less than 7.1 million - almost down to the levels of ten years ago. The fall places Edinburgh Airport nearly two million passengers a year ahead of its west coast rival.
