French rugby boost helps Edinburgh Airport stay on top

Visiting rugby fans helped Edinburgh Airport maintain its title as Scotland's busiest hub. An influx of French rugby fans for last month's RBS Six Nations match saw the number of people passing through the airport hit 637,646 - 8.4 percent more than in February last year. Passengers at rival Glasgow dropped by 1.8 percent to 510,602 in the month.
David Johnston, managing director at Edinburgh Airport, said: ‘Major sporting events such as the Six Nations attract large numbers of travelling supporters, bringing a real boost to Edinburgh and the surrounding regions. We have 11 scheduled routes between Edinburgh and France, and fans certainly made the most of these links last month.'
‘We are delighted to see our international passenger numbers continue to grow. BAA has invested heavily in developing Edinburgh's route network in recent years, bringing greater international connectivity. There is strong passenger demand for our direct European and transatlantic routes, and we expect this to continue with 27 new services starting this year.’
Traffic at Glasgow Airport fell last month, mainly due to a drop in charter passengers. The airport handled 510,602 passengers - a drop of 1.8 percent on the previous year. At Aberdeen Airport passengers were down 1.2% to 243,200. In the 12 months to February, Edinburgh Airport had 9.1 million passengers, an increase of 5.6 percent, Glasgow had 8.69 million, down 1.7 percent and Aberdeen 3.43 million, up 6.1 percent.
