Which? say airport fee safeguards needed
08.07.10
Consumer watchdog Which? has called for safeguards to prevent passengers being exploited by new airport charges, such as the £1 drop-off fee planned at Edinburgh Airport, also recently introduced at Belfast International and Cardiff, and fees to rent baggage trolleys, the Scotsman reports. Which? fears airport charges are likely to increase in number and scale as they seek to boost their income as they receive less from airlines and seeing less passengers pass through their doors.
Edinburgh Airport is to introduce a drop off fee in October, with similar fees were introduced at Cardiff Airport on Monday and Belfast International yesterday. Luton Airport doubled its trolley fee to £2 last week (which is non refundable), with charges expected to be introduced at other UK airports later this year.
Rochelle Turner from Which? Holiday said of the fees: ‘It does seem to be the way things are going. Very few airports do not have charges of one form or another. If they are not able to generate sufficient income from airlines will may look for other sources.'
'However, these charges need to be made clear up front when passengers are booking tickets, otherwise they could arrive at the airport and find themselves having to pay fees they did not expect. If it starts to mushroom, safeguards will need to be put in place to make ensure fairness for consumers.’
