Ryanair backs drop off charge
05.07.10
Plans by Edinburgh Airport to charge passengers £1 to be dropped off by car at the terminal have gained support from budget airline Ryanair, the Scotsman reports. A spokesman for the budget airline said: ‘We have absolutely no problem with it. The current drop area was being abused and often resembled a car park. There will be a free drop-off area, while drivers who pay will be able to drop off without the current delays.’
However, Ryanair is in the minority as the plans have been heavily criticised by other airlines. easyJet accused owner BAA of double-charging, saying they already pay a fee that should cover this facility, and BMI said the fee could hamper its attempts to boost numbers of passengers. Charity Age Scotland, the former Age Concern and Help the Aged, said older passengers would be hit particularly hard by the charge.
