Edinburgh Airport raise liquids issue
05.06.08
The Evening News reports that passengers flying from Edinburgh Airport are still not following Government rules for liquids in hand luggage, and are forced to give up half a tonne of liquid filled items every week. Since the rules were introduced in November 2006, this has included more than a million cans of deodorant.
New figures released by the airport show that half a tonne of items is confiscated every week. Aerosols account for around half of the 50-tonne haul but bottles of whisky, plastic water bottles and shaving gels are among the other items are regularly seized.
All plastic bottles, aerosols and sharp items are recycled but the rest of the goods are binned, including the alcohol, which is poured away before the bottles are also destroyed.
Stevie Hastie, a security officer for Edinburgh Airport, told the newspaper: ‘Passengers don't really know what is classed a 'liquid'. For example, lots of people don't realise that shaving gel or deodorants are liquids. So they turn up at the airport, check-in their hold luggage, make their way to security then have to offload their toiletries because the containers they are in are too big. It is such a waste.’
