Drug smuggler jailed

A drug smuggler caught attempting to bring £24,000 worth of cannabis into the UK via Edinburgh Airport has been jailed for 20 months. Michael Richter, from Germany, had 8.3kg of cannabis resin hidden inside a false compartment in his suitcase when he was stopped by customs officers at the airport in May.
Mr Richter, 53, claimed that he agreed to act as a courier in a bid to bribe Cambodian officials to allow him to stay in the country. He had been living in Cambodia for two and a half years, overstaying his visa.
He pleaded guilty to being concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the ban on importing drugs at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month. Sentencing, Sheriff Neil Mackinnon said yesterday that his sentence would have been 30 months had he not pled guilty. He has been served with a deportation notice.
