Ryanair to axe 20% of Edinburgh flights
03.06.11
Ryanair will axe more than a quarter of its flights from Edinburgh Airport this winter to cut costs. The airline will not fly to nine of the 32 destinations it offered from the airport last winter, meaning that a total of 20 of its 100 weekly flights a will be cut. They include flights to Berlin, Malta, Marrakesh, Tallinn and Turin.
The announcement follows the budget airline's recent decision to ground 80 of its aircraft this winter because of the current high fuel costs. Ryanair head of sales and marketing Lesley Kane said air passenger duty was another factor, adding: ‘UK airports continue to suffer from high tourist taxes, which make Scottish destinations uncompetitive.’
An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said: ‘We are confident that we will continue to add routes and mirror the growth from this year.’
