Drug smuggler caught at Edinburgh Airport in court
02.04.08
A drug courier was in court yesterday after being caught arriving at Edinburgh Airport with more than £26,000 worth of herbal cannabis gift-wrapped in a bag in February.
Cornelius Roets, 44, was stopped by customs officers at the airport after flying in from South Africa via Amsterdam in February. When asked if he had packed his bag himself he claimed it had been packed by a man named Frank in South Africa who paid him £1200 to transport it to Scotland. He said he did not know what was in the bag, but admitted suspecting it might be drugs.
Mr Roets pleaded guilty yesterday at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to the fraudulent evasion of a prohibition on the importation of cannabis under the Misuse of Drugs Act at Edinburgh Airport on February 24 this year. He was remanded in custody until he is sentenced later this month.
