Runway work increases risk of diversions for night flights

Work each night until November to resurface the runway at Edinburgh Airport means passengers on night flights into the airport this summer stand a higher risk of being diverted to other airports in bad weather, airport officials told the Scotsman newspaper.
The airport's secondary runway being used for overnight flights during an upgrade of the main runway, but it does not have an instrument landing system to help guide aircraft landing in poor visibility, such as fog and heavy rain. This issue saw a Flyglobespan plane from Lanzarote to be diverted from Edinburgh to Glasgow Airport early on Monday.
An average of 8 passenger aircraft are scheduled to take off and land every night during closure of the main runway between 23:00 and 05:45, plus 10 cargo and other aircraft flights. An airport spokeswoman told the newspaper: ‘We have always said that there is a potential risk that aircraft may have to be diverted during the resurfacing work.’ However, she said that the resurfacing work might be suspended if periods of poor visibility were forecast.
